Young Engineering Bladder Surge Tanks (BST) absorb and control surge energies in pipelines, increasing the life of the components of your system. A bladder surge tank is a large-capacity unit used in applications with water pumping stations and municipal water applications.
Young Engineering's Bladder Surge Tanks are designed as self-contained units that require no on-site air compressor (versus hydropneumatic surge tanks). Air compressors are required to maintain air levels in hydropneumatic surge tanks and can be noisy; equating to additional maintenance, regulating equipment and electrical needs, resulting in higher operating costs.
Bladder Sewage Surge Tanks (BSST)
Product Highlights
- Sizes from 40 gallon - 5,000 gallon
- Available in stainless steel or epoxy coated carbon steel
- Pre-charged bladder to control pressure transients
- Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM) approved products available
- Support designed in accordance to UBC seismic standards
An important concern for sewage tanks is that the mixture of solid and liquid wastes that flow through them can clog the system. Young Engineering’s patented Bladder Sewage Surge Tank (BSST) system combines patented high flow design with a perforated tank nozzle to pass sewage solids through the Bladder Sewage Surge Tank with no clogging.
The PVC nozzle pipe runs full length to the bottom of the Bladder Sewage Surge Tank where waste solids are easily extruded through the nozzle’s drainage slots at the bottom. Pre-charge pressure and the fluctuating movement of the bladder helps move the solid waste through the slots and then into the discharge pipes.
A fluid connection at the top of the Bladder Sewage Surge Tank allows flushing or cleaning of accumulated solid debris in the nozzle pipe, as needed.
Air compressors must constantly maintain air levels in bladderless surge tanks.Their Bladder Sewage Surge Tanks are self-contained units that do not require air compressors.

Municipal Water, Fuel, Power Wash Systems and Reverse Osmosis
Young Engineering is a leader in the surge control industry offering the largest size range surge vessels designed to control hydraulic transients. Pressure surges, or hydraulic transients, often occur with the opening and closing of valves or with the start up and shut down of pumps, which can result in damaged pipeline systems. Young Engineering surge vessels absorb and control these surge energies, preventing damage and increasing the life of the components of your system.
